Full description
Did you know that the least populated municipality in Southern Italy is located in Sicily and is a real gem of history and culture? It is Roccafiorita, in the province of Messina, and you will discover it with a pleasant trekking excursion culminating with a tasting of local wines and typical products.
Together with an excursion guide, you will walk a little-trodden itinerary on country roads that cross the Alcantara Valley and the Agrò Valley, in the shadow of MountEtna on one side and the Peloritani Mountains on the other.
An auteur itinerary, full of relaxation and immersion in the nature and traditions of an authentic corner of eastern Sicily still unknown to mass tourism. And when one speaks of Sicily... one cannot but reserve a space for the pleasures of the palate! Do you agree?
What we will do
The activity starts in Taormina at around 8.30 am with a pick-up at your hotel or residence (if you do not reside within the municipality, you can agree with the guide on a different meeting point, but always in the area between Taormina, Giardini Naxos and the immediate surroundings). A short shuttle transfer will take us to the start of our trek to Roccafiorita.
We will walk along quiet country roads, straddling the Alcantara Valley and the Agrò Valley. We will be constantly surrounded by unspoilt Mediterranean nature, its intense colours, evocative scents and its 'inhabitants' peeping through the bushes.
In about two hours' walk we will reach Monte Kalfa, 1000 metres above sea level. Here we will stop to admire the iconic Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Aiuto and the marvellous, sweeping panorama that opens up over the valleys below and the hills all around, including Etna , all the way to the coastline overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
We then continue on to the village of Roccafiorita, the smallest municipality in Sicily and the least populous in all of southern Italy. With its 198 inhabitants, today it is an albergo diffuso where hospitality is one of the values most deeply felt by the population. The village retains many traces of its feudal past, making it a real gem of history and culture, which we will learn about thanks to the guide's tales.
The trekking tour ends on a high note with an excellent tasting of wine and local products at the exclusive Principe di Roccafiorita winery. Thus, having satisfied all our senses, we will be ready to bid farewell to the Agrò Valley and return to Taormina.
The activity has a total duration of about 6 hours, of which 4 hours will be needed to complete the 8-km trek in peace.
Who it is aimed at
This activity is open to everyone, with no age limit. The trekking path does not present any particular difficulties, you just need to be used to walking for several hours.
Other information
This activity can be booked from March to November and is confirmed when there are at least 4 participants. It does not take place in June, July and August, due to excessively high temperatures.
After booking, you will agree with your guide on the meeting point for the pick-up. If you live outside the Taormina area, you can arrange the meeting point at the car park located just after the Giardini Naxos motorway exit. The shuttle will pick you up and take you back there.
A different departure time can be arranged, depending on the availability of the guide.
