Full description

The Cengia dei Contrabbandieri (Smugglers ' ledge) ferrata is a legendary route on Lake Garda formed by a ledge overlooking the lake. The name derives from the fact that not so long ago it was used as a path by salt and tobacco smugglers.

Accompanied by a UIAGM-certified mountain guide, we will walk along this magnificent trail that alternates between via ferrata stretches and overhanging passages, which will leave you breathless! All the necessary equipment is provided by the Guide, you only have to think about having fun!

The hike lasts about 5-6 hours. Some particularly exposed stretches make it of medium difficulty and it is preferable not to be a first-time via ferrata climber, although the pitons that protect the most difficult passages will allow you to move in total safety.

What we will do

We will meet at the meeting point at the Guide's Office and Climbing Gymnasium in Pieve di Ledro and then head towards the starting point of the ferrata.

The path, also called Massimiliano Torti as a dedication to the mountaineer who made the most of it, consists of a horizontal rock route that crosses the Dos de Calà rock face, and for the most part takes advantage of a barely visible ledge overlooking the lake, which was the beginning of a project for a road that was never realised and which was supposed to connect Limone sul Garda with Valle di Ledro.

The walk up the ledge is facilitated by the presence of pitons, ropes and karabiners that allow us to belay in the most dangerous places. We begin with a passage on a steel rope, then we balance over a trunk probably left by smugglers to then reach a descending ladder before venturing back onto vertiginous stretches of ledge. To end on a high note, we tackle a final stretch of about 50 metres on a ferrata with a steel rope.

The entire route enjoys a unique and otherwise inaccessible view. We will admire a unique panorama on a path carved into the rock that plunges into the waters below.

The hike lasts a total of about 5 to 6 hours, and we will cover about 4 km for a difference in altitude of 350 metres, both active and passive.
