Full description

Not all that glitters is gold, but the mines of Monferrato will make you think again!

Get ready to walk along remote paths inside the Capanne di Marcarolo and Gran Monferrato Park and enter the tunnels where, since 1500, miners extracted wealth and fortune.

A more than 5-houradventure to discover an ancient world, amidst stories, culture and the beautiful landscapes of the Lavagnina Lakes. It won't be a gold rush, but we guarantee you an equally rich walk!

What we will do

We will meet in Casaleggio Boiro (AL), at the time indicated in the booking.

Here we will meet our guide and head, each with our own means of transport, to the car park at Cravaria, where we will leave the cars and begin the hike on foot.

We will walk for about 7 km, with a difference in altitude of 200 m, discovering along the way the secrets of the ancient aurifodine, extensive piles of pebbles that bear witness to mining activity in Roman times.

Past a dam, we will enter the fascinating m1 gold mines located near the Lavagnina Lakes, from which, at particular times, we will be able to admire the remains of the mills used to process gold sand. Just like the miners, we will wear helmets and cold-light headlamps to make our way through the darkness.

In the underground descent into the tunnels , we will have the chance to discover the fascinating history of mining, which was conducted from the 1500s onwards and resumed in the 1800s, before it was finally closed in the early 1900s. But also to discover special animal species such as the geotriton, a small endemic specimen of the terrestrial salamander.

On our way out, we will resume our walk and face a 40-minute climb that will take us to the m13 mine, another 300-metre tunnel that follows the gold seams. The visit to the 2 mines will take 20 minutes each.

At the end, we will take the path back to the car park after 5½ hours.
