Full description
Come and discover the extraordinary world of birds of prey in the Lari hills in the midst of greenery.
Near Casciana Terme Lari, you will have the opportunity to get to know more than 50 birds of prey and interact with some of them under the supervision of an expert falconer.
During the two and a half hours of theory you will learn interesting notions about birds of prey, while during the one and a half hours of practice you will be able to watch a flight demonstration and learn how to call some species to the fist. We are waiting for you!
What we will do
We will meet at the time selected during booking in Casciana Terme Lari (PI). Here, the falconer will welcome us and show us around his park, which covers several hectares, where we will feel as though we are stepping into an enchanted world.
The facility, nestled amongst the green hills of the Lari area, is one of the largest of its kind in Italy and is home to no fewer than 55 different birds representing 35 different species of birds of prey: griffon vultures, eagles, barn owls, little owls, scops owls, tawny owls and many others. After attending a briefing to learn the rules to follow within the facility, we’ll be ready to begin our guided tour to get up close to the birds of prey.
The falconer will captivate us with a technical and scientific explanation of each species, including insights into their behaviour and the history of falconry, so we can discover all their secrets and unique characteristics. During this theoretical session, lasting around two and a half hours, we’ll learn to recognise birds of prey, discovering what a bird of prey is, its morphology and physiology, and its importance in nature.
At this point, we’ll be ready to move on to the practical part, where we’ll learn how to use traditional falconry equipment and watch a flight demonstration by the falconer, featuring some magnificent eagles. In fact, this centre is home to several rare and magnificent specimens, including the only Verreaux’s black eagle in Italy.
Then it will be our turn to have a go: we’ll be able to interact with various birds of prey, such as the buzzard, the tawny owl or the barn owl, and try our hand at making the bird fly and calling it back to our fist. The falconer will be on hand at all times to ensure our complete safety.
The activity will last a total of 4 hours, comprising 2½ hours of theory and 1½ hours of practical training.
