Full description

Experience the mountains from a new perspective and discover the thrills of one of the most fascinating winter disciplines:ice climbing.

Together with an Alpine Guide, you will dedicate a whole day toice climbing in the Varaita Valley, one of the valleys of Monviso, learning the best techniques for climbing the frozen waterfalls that in winter turn into real walls to climb!

What we will do

The meeting point for the activity is at 8:30 a.m. in Pontechianale (CN), in the heart of the Varaita Valley. First, the Alpine Guide will give an introductory briefing on the activity, instructing us on theuse of the equipment (crampons, ice axes and harness, included in the participation fee) and on the rules of behaviour to be implemented in case of emergency.

After that, we will approach the frozen waterfalls of Pineta Nord, where our ice climbing experience will take place. The guide will teach us Piolect Traction, a frontal progression technique specific toice climbing, based on the traction of the arms and the alternating use of two ice axes to be planted above the head.

During the day, we will tackle three lengths totalling 100 metres of vertical drop, alternating theory, practice and fine-tuning of techniques. The activity will last a total of about 6.5 hours, including a break for a packed lunch.
