Tasting lunch with oil masterclass in a historic Tuscia winery

We'll let you in on a secret: we have discovered a 'portal' to a journey through time!

It is located at the Fattoria Madonna delle Macchie in Castiglione in Teverina and all you have to do is cross the threshold of its historic cellar to leave the present behind and find yourself in the typical atmosphere of a nineteenth-century farming civilisation.

An experience in which you will learn about the contrast between modern technology and the charm of the past, cross a true medieval 'escape route' and become an expert in EVO oil with a dedicated masterclass.

And if you thought that was the end of it, know that a tasting lunch with no less than 6 wines to match is also waiting for you!

What we will do

The appointment is at the selected time at the Fattoria Madonna delle Macchie in the province of Viterbo, in the hilly setting of Tuscia, between Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio. We will be welcomed by our guide, who will accompany us on a tour that will compare the charm of the past with the innovation of the present.

We will begin with a walk through the surrounding vineyards, and then explore the modern part of the winery, visiting the technological cellar and the oil mill where today's products are produced. The contrast will be stark when we enter the historic 19th-century cellar: amidst period tools and underground passages dug into the tuff, we will understand how the farming civilisation has evolved while keeping its roots intact. We will then pass through the evocative medieval tunnel, an ancient secret escape route that today emerges in the garden under a 400-year-old oak tree.

The visit will continue with an extra virgin olive oil masterclass lasting about 30 minutes. We will learn how to recognise a quality oil through a guided tasting that will compare the different types and vintages of EVO oil produced by the company, as well as an oil of inferior quality, so that we can learn how to confidently distinguish the merits and flaws of a 'good oil'.

Finally, we will sit down for the tasting lunch (outdoors or in a dedicated room) where each course will be designed to enhance the native wines. The seasonal menu includes antipasto, first and second courses of typical local cuisine, paired with no less than 6 labels: Vermentino 1913, Grechetto Dr Belcapo, Matilde Orvieto DOC, Forcone Rosso Tuscia DOC and Ruffiano di Confine (Aleatico 100% ). We will end on a sweet note with dessert paired with Nettare di Confine, a sweet 100% Aleatico.

The experience will last a total of about 5 hours.

Who it is aimed at

The experience is recommended for 18 year olds and over, as the wine tasting is reserved for adults only.

Any accompanying persons under 9 years of age attend free of charge, while children between 10 and 17 years of age pay a reduced rate.

The facility is not accessible to wheelchair users or those with pushchairs.
