Fancy a dip into the past?
No, we're not talking about flipping through your family photo albums - we're talking about swimming among submerged wrecks and Greek ruins lying on the seabed, in the company of anarchaeologist who will be your guide.
Forget documentaries: this 5-hour snorkelling tour will catapult you into the history of Ionian Calabria, amidst swimming over ancient columns and sunken ships, aboard an inflatable boat that will turn into a time machine!
What we will do
The appointment is 15 minutes before 09:00 at the meeting point in Marina di Gioiosa Ionica (RC). Here we will be welcomed by the staff and we will try out theequipment (mask, snorkel and fins).
Afterwards, we will reach the Porto delle Grazie in Roccella Ionica by shuttle bus and board a 7.5-metre dinghy . At this point we will be officially ready for our snorkelling tour!
On board with us will be anarchaeologist who will tell us the secrets hidden beneath the surface of the water, with insights into Roccella Jonica's castle and coastal towers.
The first snokeling stop will be near the site where the Riace Bronzes were found, where we will be told about the extraordinary event that took place in 1972.
Next, we will move on to Guardavalle Marina to observe the wreck of the ship Marineta, stranded on a sandy seabed rich in biodiversity a few metres deep.
The third and final stop will be the site of theancient Greek city of Kaulon, where there is a vast underwater archaeological area with more than 200 remains of Greek columns and architectural elements dating back to the fifth century BC.
We will finally return by dinghy to the meeting point. The experience will last about 5 hours in total.
Who it is aimed at
The experience is suitable for ages 8 and up; children under the age of 18 must have a signed release form.
Swimming skills are required to participate in the activity.
Other information
The experience takes place from June to September depending on weather and sea conditions and is confirmed with a minimum of 5 adult participants.
There is free parking on site. The meeting point can be reached by public transport.
There are changing rooms with showers and toilets at the diving centre.
