Snorkelling tour to the underwater city of Aenaria on Ischia

Put on your mask, fins and snorkel and set off on a snorkelling tour to discover Aenaria, an ancient Roman citadel located on Cartaromana Bay and suddenly destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 150 BC.

Today Aenaria lies below sea level at a depth of six metres and can be visited on asnorkelling excursion departing from Ischia. In addition to this underwater jewel you will admire suggestive natural caves, from the Grotta Verde to the Grotta del Mago, the Scoglio del Ninfeo and curious marine volcanic phenomena.

The tour will also be an opportunity to learn about Ischia's natural and historical treasures with a multimedia video and the assistance of expert guides. We are waiting for you!

What we will do

The meeting is at 1pm at the diving centre in the Ischia Ponte area. Here we will meet the guides, who will provide us with all the necessaryequipment and get us on the boat in the direction of Aenaria.

The guides will show us an interesting 20-minute video that will illustrate the archaeological research work that, year after year, is revealing the remains of this ancient Roman citadel and, in particular, its port and the wall structures of a maritime villa. We will also see a multimedia reconstruction of ancient Aenaria.

Once we reach the dive site, we will dive with mask and snorkel to admire the underwater walls and the mysterious Grotta del Ninfeo, the origin of which is still unknown. We will then visit the Grotta Verde (Green Cave), which takes its name from the reflections of the sun that, penetrating through the small entrance, tint the water a deep green.

We will swim to the Grotta del Mago, a place rich in stories and legends. Along the way, we will observe many typical Mediterranean marine species that inhabit the seabed of Ischia.

Finally, we will visit the area in front of the Aragonese Castle, known for some secondary volcanic phenomena. The seabed of Ischia is in fact affected by considerable volcanic activity that attracts the interest of many international scholars.

The activity will last 3 hours and will end with the return - scheduled between 4.15 p.m. and 5 p.m., depending on the number of participants - to the starting point.

Who it is aimed at

The activity is suitable for ages 10 and up.

This activity is of an easy level and is open to all those who have good aquatic skills and are able to swim, even for short stretches.

Other information

The activity can be booked from May to October and is confirmed with a minimum of 4 participants.

Showers, toilets and changing rooms can be used at the diving centre.
