TheAlta Maremma, between the provinces of Grosseto and Livorno, is an area best known for its natural beauty. Perhaps you did not know, however, that it is an area rich in minerals, home to an Archaeo-mineral Park full of surprises.
The area we will visit is located in the heart of the Colline Metallifere della Maremma, famous for the extraction of copper, silver and other minerals. Today the mines are almost completely disused, but traces ofmining activity in the past are still clearly visible throughout the area.
This speleological excursion will take you to discover the secrets of the underground, to experience mining techniques, to learn about the darkness, silence and depths of the quarries and to get a taste of what life was like for the miners of old in these harsh but highly fascinating places.
What we will do
The meeting point will be in Montieri, in the province of Grosseto. There we will form the group, meet the guide, and all together we will drive to the village of Gerfalco, about 6 km away, the access point to the Montieri Archaeo-mineral Park . The excursion will take place in a succession of natural caves, tunnels and abandoned mines.
The area was long exploited for the richness of its subsoil, from Etruscan times until the last century. Traces of archaeological and mining excavations are still present today and we will discover them thanks to the precise indications of the guide, who will give us a complete overview of the past and present.
Wearing helmets and headlamps, like real speleologists, we will explore the caves, experience total darkness and silence, learn about minerals, see stalactites and stalagmites that form thanks to humidity, and the colonies of bats that have taken over the caves again, after the miners had driven them out.
The activity lasts three hours and is particularly suitable for educational purposes. It can also be an original idea to celebrate a birthday or a special occasion. In this case there will be a picnic and a candlelight toast inside a cave.

To celebrate birthdays or other occasions with a toast inside the cave, it is necessary to make arrangements with the guide after booking.
For children under the age of 6, the excursion is free of charge.

What happens in case of bad weather?
If you have made a fixed date reservation and the weather conditions are not suitable for the safe conduct of the activity (in the expert opinion of the guide), you will be refunded the full amount paid. The guide may suggest an alternative date or time for you to conduct the activity. You can freely choose whether or not to accept these proposals. If you can’t retrieve it, we will process a full refund! If you have set the date for your Gift Voucher and bad weather did not allow the activity to take place, the Voucher remains regularly valid until the expiration date indicated on it.
If I cancel the reservation, can I get a full refund?
