You can't miss one of the most scenic and evocative excursions in the province of L'Aquila... With donkeys!
This half-day trek starts from Santo Stefano di Sessanio and, following an itinerary of about 10 km, will take you to Rocca Calascio Castle, the highest in Italy.

What we will do
We will meet at the time selected during the booking process in Santo Stefano di Sessanio (AQ). Here we will meet the guide who will accompany us on this experience and introduce us to Leandra, Dafne, Riccardina, and all her friendly donkeys.
After a briefing of about 10 minutes on the safety rules to be followed during the trek, we will be ready to set off on our adventure. We will walk along mountain paths in the midst of nature with views of the Gran Sasso and Campo Imperatore in the company of the donkeys that will be assigned to us: for groups of 2 to 5 people there will be a single donkey that we can lead alternately.
We will arrive at Rocca Calascio, which, at an altitude of almost 1,500 metres, is the highest castle in Italy and among the highest in Europe, as well as one of the oldest man-made settlements in Abruzzo. We will have the opportunity to admire the interior of this fortification built entirely of white limestone: we will have 30 minutes to visit this evocative place on our own .
After this brief stop, we will resume the loop trail of approximately 10 km with a total height difference of 250 m, during which the guide will tell us about the characteristics and curiosities of the donkeys that will keep us company during the walk.
After about 4 hours, of which 3.5 hours of walking, we will return to the starting point.
Who it is aimed at
The activity is suitable for everyone from 3 years of age; good walking habits are required to participate. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Children up to 12 years of age and weighing up to 50 kg may ride on the donkey during the ride.
Other information
The activity can be booked throughout the year and is confirmed on reaching a minimum of 4 participants.
There is an allocation of 1 donkey per group of a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 participants.
Any accompanying persons may remain at the centre.
Dogs are allowed as long as they are on a leash; they will walk in front of the donkeys so as not to frighten them.
