Trekking to the Rocca della Verruca in the Pisan Mountains

Lace up your boots and get ready for a suggestive trekking excursion to the Rocca della Verruca, a tour that will let you discover the surprising nature of the mountains around Pisa and the history of the ancient Maritime Republic.

You will visit the village of Montemagno, then continue on the trails until you reach the Rocca, from which you will enjoy a wonderful view of the coast.

The Rocca della Verruca, which dominates the promontory of the same name, has been the scene of many battles, an impassable fortress that even entered the interest of Leonardo Da Vinci, who visited it to plan the deviation of the course of the Arno River.

Even today it is still a site subject to study and archaeological excavations and is waiting to give you an experience full of emotions!

What we will do

The meeting point for our trekking excursion is at the car park of Montemagno, a hamlet of the municipality of Calci in the province of Pisa.

From here we will set out to conquer the Rocca della Verruca, along an itinerary that will take us through the nature of the Pisan mountains and the Valgraziosa valley. In addition to the suggestive views, along the way we will be able to encounter numerous examples of the rich local fauna, in particular birds of prey such as buzzards, buzzards and peregrine falcons.

We will walk along the mountains until we reach Prato Ceccottino. From here, a path carved into the rock will take us back in time to the battles between the Pisans and the Florentines, epic clashes that took place in the golden age of the Communes.

Thus, we will reach the Varruca promontory and its ancient and now decaying fortress, and here we will stop to admire the breathtaking landscape that will open up before our eyes: from Valdarno to Volterra, from Livorno to Liguria and on clear days even Corsica!

On the return journey, we will travel back along the road with the variant of theMontemagno loop. We will be seduced by the charm of the small village with its finely restored stone houses and our curiosity will be satisfied by historical anecdotes about the place.

In all, the hike will last about 4 hours and a total height difference of 500 metres.

Who it is aimed at

This activity is open to everyone, from 6 years old and up. Anyone in good health and used to long walks in nature, including uphill ones, can participate.

This activity can take place all year round (subject to weather and guide availability) at various times, including at sunset.

Onrequest, a shuttle service is available within 30 km to reach the facility (max. 6 persons). The cost varies according to distance: contact the organisers after booking confirmation to arrange this option.
