Full description
Set out to discover the Serra Dolcedorme, the highest mountain in the south, with atrekking activity in the company of a certified local guide who will enchant you with his tales of the'Roof of the South' and accompany you to the best spots from which to observe breathtaking views.
You will start at an altitude of 1,560 m and arrive at 2,267 m above sea level. You will cross the heart of the Pollino Park, the largest natural park in Italy, where, with a bit of luck, you will be able to observe the griffon vulture soaring through the sky.
You will pass through beech forests, green glades and encounter horses living in a semi-wild state on the high-altitude plateaus. Venture out on one of the most beautiful hikes in southern Italy!
What we will do
We will meet in Campotenese, a hamlet of the municipality of Morano Calabro (CS). Once the group is formed, we will move to Colle Impiso, at an altitude of 1,560 m. From here we will begin our trek towards Serra Dolcedorme.
The route begins in the shade of beautiful beech forests, with obligatory passage through plains frequented by grazing cows and horses in a semi-wild state. We pass by a fresh water source for a short refreshment and snack.
On reaching the high plateaus, we will be surrounded by the highest mountains of the Pollino, which are over 2,000 m high. During the ascent, our gaze will sweep over the extraordinarily beautiful landscapes ofItaly's largest protected area.
We will be able to admire in the distance the lands of Basilicata, the northern slope of the Pollino Park, Mount Sirino, the Piana di Sibari, the Sila Mountains and the Pellegrino Massif. On clear days we will be able to see the two seas surrounding this park, the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, Mount Etna and the Aeolian Islands.
The first part of the return trip will be a loop, passing through the ancient and imposing Loricated Pines, symbols of the Pollino National Park. Then we will cross the plains again to be back at the starting point after about 9.5 hours (breaks included).
