Full description

Set off at sunset on the trails of the Gran Sasso National Park and climb up to Rocca Calascio, the highest stronghold in the entireApennines.

Along the panoramic ridge you will enjoy a magnificent view of the highest peaks in Abruzzo: a spectacle made even more evocative by the colours of the last rays of the sun.

An excursion guide will accompany you on this fascinating trekking tour through history and nature, telling you all the secrets of the area.

What we will do

We will meet a few hours before sunset at the pine grove in the locality of Lago, in Santo Stefano di Sessanio (AQ), one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Once the group is formed, the guide will give an introductory briefing and we will be ready to go.

From 1232 metres above sea level, we will start to climb along the panoramic ridge overlooking the valley and pass the characteristic octagonal church of Madonna della Pietà. From here we will continue under Monte delle Croci to reach the splendid Rocca Calascio, 1460 m above sea level, surrounded by fascinating scenery that has served as a backdrop for films and documentaries.

We will reach the summit just in time to admire the sunset. From up there, our gaze will sweep from the highest peaks of the Gran Sasso to the Campo Imperatore plain, and then from Majella to the Morrone massif to the Sirente and Velino mountains.

After the ascent, we can refresh ourselves with a picnic dinner before embarking on the rest of the loop trail that will take us back to our starting point after 12 km of walking and about 400 metres of altitude difference. The activity lasts a total of 5 hours.
