Full description
Not far from Florence there is a little-known and fascinating place: the old Fornello railway station and the surrounding village, now completely abandoned. It is a place with a unique atmosphere, come and discover it with a trekking tour!
The trail winding through the Mugello woods will take you to explore the disused railway tracks, the ghostly tunnel, and the abandoned and overgrown railway huts. The environmental guide who will accompany you will make you relive these places of the past, immersed in legend and nature.
An excursion in Mugello cannot end without tasting good Tuscan wine and typical products. It will be a relaxing moment along the way, to be enjoyed to the full in order to discover all the aspects of this wonderful land, between history, nature and flavours.
What we will do
The meeting point will be at the Vicchio (FI) railway station, where we will meet the environmental guide who will lead us along the itinerary. Leaving the town, we will take the trekking route through the Mugello Apennines, an area inhabited in antiquity by the Etruscans and the Romans, by the Conti Guidi in the Middle Ages and by farming families until the 1960s.
We will take a journey between past and present, immersed in a nature where the hand of man is always clearly visible. We will walk among olive, peach, apple and cherry trees, and as we ascend in altitude the typical hilly landscape will give way to woodland. We will then arrive at the ghost village of Fornello, where the old station, topped by a quarry and work buildings, forms a real village in the heart of the mountain. Here, the remains of the railway run into the forest, giving the visitor amagical, fairy-tale atmosphere.
After exploring the village, we will stop at the tables next to the mine, surrounded by nature, perfect for enjoying a moment of relaxation accompanied by a glass of wine and a typical Tuscan snack. After refreshing ourselves, we will resume our walk through woods and streams of clear water, and the loop trail will end by crossing a cultivation of chestnut trees, a typical activity in the mountainous area of Mugello.
The activity lasts five hours in total. The ti trek is about 7 km long, has a fair difference in altitude and includes some challenging stretches.
