Full description
Explore the Monti Sibillini National Park and climb Mount Vettore to admire the fascinating Lago di Pilato, one of the rare glacial basins in the Apennines.
Set off from Castelluccio di Norcia and reach an altitude of 1,941 m in the company of a hiking guide who will tell you stories, curiosities and environmental characteristics of the place.
What we will do
The meeting with the guide is at 9 a.m. in Norcia (PG). Having formed the group and held an introductory briefing on the route, we will move by car to Castelluccio di Norcia, from where the trekking route will begin in the direction of the Capanna Ghezzi refuge, on the border between Umbria and Marche.
Once at the refuge, time to refresh ourselves and regain our energy, and we will set off again along the path that climbs up the mountains to an altitude of 1,941 metres. At that point we will be enraptured by the view of Lago di Pilato, also known as the "lake with glasses" due to the shape of its communicating basins.
Lago di Pilato is the only natural lake in the Marche region and one of the few glacial lakes in the Apennines. It rises in a narrow glacial valley, surrounded by the highest peaks of the Sibillini Mountains and keeps part of its surface covered with snow for most of the year, often even in summer.
We will stop for as long as necessary to take photos and admire the landscape. Then we will begin our descent towards the starting point, which we will reach around 16:00. The total length of the route, between outward and return, will be 16 km with 1000 metres of altitude difference.
