Full description

This 2-day multi-pitch sport climbing course takes place on the Pietra di Bismantova, in the province of Reggio Emilia, on a specially prepared route that allows each student to try out, under the supervision of a guide, the manoeuvres necessary to tackle a long route safely.

The aim of the course is to learn how to independently tackle a multipitch sport route, with an easy difficulty level for those with a 5a level in climbing.

What we will do

The multi-pitch sport climbing course takes place on a specially equipped route. Each student will try out all manoeuvres and techniques independently, under the constant and careful supervision of the guide.

Outline programme:

On the first day, we meet at the Pietra di Bismantova car park at 8.50 am. We will conduct a short theory lesson on materials, after which the practice will immediately begin.

On an easy slab we will make short pitches, stopping at the belay, recovering our companion and continuing on to the next pitch. At the end of the second pitch we will abseil down to the base, to start again in a different configuration.

Repetition is fundamental to assimilate the techniques and make them your own.

On the second day we will do two multi-pitch routes on Pietra di Bismantova.

Techniques covered in the course:

  • Belaying the lead climber with a bucket and locking loop, necessary to be able to detach the hands while keeping the partner safe.
  • Belays: construction methods, self-belaying at belays and rope management at belays.
  • Recovery of the second with Gi-gi plate. What if we forget the tag at the previous belay? We will learn the use of the half-barrel, with buttonhole and counter-barrel and the heart knot.
  • Safeabseiling, to descend routes and sometimes to go on the attack.
  • Minimum necessary self-rescue manoeuvres, those that are needed - for example - in the event of an overhanging or traverse fall, or in the event of an error or jamming during abseiling. We will learn how to use self-blocking knots and how to ascend a rope.

Who it is aimed at

The course is aimed at those already practising rock climbing at grade 5a.
