What inspired Dante to design his inferno?
An ancient fortress in the upper Casentino, the Castello di Romena. And it is precisely this fortress that you will visit in this fantastic 2½-hour horseback riding experience.
Set off from Pratovecchio, a few kilometres from Florence, and ride in the company of an equestrian guide along an easy 15 km route, also suitable for beginners. You will ride among majestic white fir trees and medieval castles, following in Dante's footsteps!
What we will do
The appointment is at the riding school in Pratovecchio, in the province of Arezzo. On arrival, the equestrian guide will welcome us and take us to meet the splendid horses of the riding school, already saddled and ready to go out for a ride. Before setting off, the guide will introduce us to the basic techniques for handling the horse with a 15-20 minute briefing inside the riding school on how to brake and ride safely.
We will leave the riding school for a walk of about 2 hours immersed in the Casentino Valley landscape, surrounded by chestnut and silver fir forests that are home to roe deer, red deer, fallow deer and hares. These majestic firs, which can reach extraordinary heights, not only contribute to the rich ecosystem but also create analmost fairytale-like atmosphere.
In the company of our guide we will ride along an easy 15 km route at a leisurelypace, which will allow us to fully enjoy the surrounding landscape and the panoramic view of Poppi Castle and Porciano Castle. If conditions permit, we will also ford the Arno River.
On the way we will make a photo stop in front of the impressive Castello di Romena, one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in Tuscany. Its connection with Dante makes it even more interesting: the poet found refuge here during his exile and mentioned the castle and the nearby Fonte Branda in his Divine Comedy.
Finally, we calmly return to the stables. Between briefings, stops and horseback riding, the experience lasts a total of about 2½ hours.
Who it is aimed at
The activity is suitable for everyone over the age of 14. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult in the riding hall.
A maximum weight of 95 kg is required to participate in this activity. No horse riding experience is necessary.

The activity can be booked all year round and is confirmed with a minimum of 2 participants.
The riding is English-style.
The meeting place cannot be reached by public transport.
Dogs are allowed and can be left in the riding stables in special enclosures.
