Are you ready to climb a volcano? Experience the unforgettable experience of trekking up the Gran Cratere on the island of Vulcano in the Aeolian Islands. Once at the top, at an altitude of almost 400 metres, you can admire the breathtaking panorama of the entire Aeolian archipelago.
Enjoy the45-minute excursion from Vulcano Porto in the company of an expert volcanological guide and discover a unique and evocative place where you can witness volcanic phenomena.
What we will do
The meeting point is in front of the Faraglioni bar in Vulcano Porto (ME), where we will meet the experienced volcanological guide who will accompany us on our climb up the crater of Vulcano, also known as the 'Vulcan Pit'.
After a short briefing, our 45-minute walk will begin. A path surrounded by nature, among striking volcanic rocks and gorse, will take us to the summit of the volcano. Here we will stop for about half an hour to fully enjoy the view from the top of the crater.
Afterwards, there will be the return walk to Vulcano Porto.
This is a nature excursion and a real must for all trekking enthusiasts, who will have the opportunity not only to admire a unique view, but to climb a mountain that is still 'alive'. The crater, in fact, is now in a dormant state, but continues to emit heat and fumaroles, despite the fact that its last eruption dates back to the spring of 1890.
During the excursion, it will therefore be possible to witness phenomena of a volcanic nature, such as hot springs and fumaroles. These have a beneficial effect on health and in particular on the treatment of rheumatism.
The excursion lasts a total of two and a half hours, including 45 minutes to reach the summit of the Gran Cratere, about half an hour to stop and admire the view and 30 minutes for the descent to Vulcano Porto.
For those interested, there is also the possibility of combining the activity with a boat trip to Vulcano.
Who it is aimed at
The hike is of an easy level and suitable for anyone who is used to walking. The minimum age to participate in the tour is 4 years.
Other information
This activity is available all year round and is confirmed when there are at least 4 participants. In high season, it is also possible to book thesunset hike.
After booking, it is possible to request a packed lunch of 5 euros to be collected on site.

If you have made a fixed date reservation and the weather conditions are not suitable for the safe conduct of the activity (in the expert opinion of the guide), you will be refunded the full amount paid. The guide may suggest an alternative date or time for you to conduct the activity. You can freely choose whether or not to accept these proposals. If you can’t retrieve it, we will process a full refund! If you have set the date for your Gift Voucher and bad weather did not allow the activity to take place, the Voucher remains regularly valid until the expiration date indicated on it.
If I cancel the reservation, can I get a full refund?
For this activity, the cancellation policy is flexible. You get a full refund if you cancel within 5 days from the activity start date. Within 4 and 3 days from the activity start date you will get a 50% refund. You can find the full policies in the Cancellation Policy section.
