How to go windsurfing: everything you need to know
The two essential elements of the sport are water and wind. Before even setting foot in the water, anyone who wants to get into windsurfing must learn the basics of wind theory. Windsurfing, in fact, is a bit like steering a small sailboat: knowledge of currents is essential.
Basic windsurfing courses all begin with a theory lesson performed on land, in which the student learns how to handle the equipment and recognize currents and wind conditions. The next step is to acquire proper posture to grip the glider and maintain balance on the board. Next you go out on the water, often with the assistance of a support boat, and try your first starts and maneuvers.
Lake Garda Windsurfing: the best spots
Thanks to almost always favorable wind conditions, Lake Garda is one of the best locations in Italy for windsurfing. On all sides there are windsurfing schools and surf centers for equipment rental. Torbole and Riva del Garda on the shores of Trentino are among the most-loved spots in the world. Tignale and Campione del Garda are the best bases on the Lombardy side, while Malcesine is also confirmed as the most popular windsurfing location on the Veneto side.
How much does a windsurfing lesson on Lake Garda cost?
Prices for windsurfing on Lake Garda depend on the location, duration and level of the activity. For example, a basic 2-hour lesson in Malcesine costs 60 euros per person. In Tignale, a lesson of the same duration costs 119 euros, while a 3-hour lesson in Torbole costs 108 euros. Equipment is always included.
Gift a windsurfing course on Lake Garda
Looking for the right gift for a particularly athletic friend or family member? A windsurfing lesson or mini-course on Lake Garda is a guaranteed hit. Or, you can give an introductory lesson to someone who has never done water sports and let them discover the excitement and fun of being in the water surrounded by the lake’s beautiful views.
Guide to the winds: the Pelér and the Ora
The conformation of Lake Garda and the surrounding environment cause the winds to alternate and blow in different directions. The main winds on the lake are the Pelèr and the Ora, which blow at different times of the day.
The Pelèr blows until noon from north to south and forms small sets of waves that become excellent trampolines for windsurfers and kiters.
The Ora, however, blows in the afternoon in the opposite direction. This wind reaches its maximum strength in the Upper Garda where the lake narrows causing a significant increase in wind speed, making it for all intents and purposes a paradise for sailing sports.

18 Sep 2025 | One-day windsurfing course in Malcesine on Lake Garda
Excellent guides
Very satisfied because I achieved my goal. Very friendly, competent and patient guides. They are German and with the one who was following me directly we communicated in English. The only thing that left me a bit puzzled was that only after signing the papers I was informed that the course was being postponed by 2 hours due to lack of wind. As I had a commitment that could not be postponed, I would have liked to have known this before I signed so that I could deal with a possible postponement. However, I wasn't in time to ask if we could agree on another day, when the weather conditions improved and everything went smoothly.
