Dog sledding consists in a ride through the snow in a dog sled. The origins of this activity go back to the Arctic, Eskimo and Athabaskan people. Today it is primarily a sports and recreational practice. In the past, however, before the advent of snowmobiles, sleds with dogs were used as actual means of transportation.
Outdoor centers that offer dog sledding use perfectly trained sled dogs that can interact even with beginners and children. Each sled is pulled by a team of at least two or three dogs on a beaten trail.
There are two types of offered experiences: a sled tour with the instructor or an actual driving test. In this case, you first meet the Huskies to get acquainted and establish a good relationship. Then you learn the main commands of pause, turn and restart.
Dog sledding is a purely winter activity. However, experiences with sled dogs can also take place in spring and summer. In this case, it is referred to as dog trekking. This practice involves walking dogs while wearing a special harness attached to the animal’s vest. Some centers, however, offer summer tours with Huskies using a wheeled cart instead of a sled.
Sledding can be done in Trentino in several locations. Madonna di Campiglio and Pinzolo are the centers of choice for a wonderful dog sled race through the landscapes of the Dolomites. The Alpe Cimbra also offers very picturesque routes such as those in Folgaria and Lavarone. Here you can go dog sledding in Millegrobbe, near a beautiful mountain pasture that organizes both introductory experiences and advanced courses for those who want to become instructors and get closer to the world of dog sleding.
Prices for a dog sledding experience in Trentino vary by location and type of experience. To get an idea: in Lavarone a 30-minute sleddog driving trial costs 35 euros per person.
