Snowshoeing in Trentino: the best routes to snowshoe

Snowshoe hikers can explore the valleys of Trentino and admire beautiful winter landscapes. Among the best snowshoe trails are those on the Paganella mountain range in the Brenta Dolomites. Also popular for snowshoeing are Folgaria and Lavarone, on the Alpe Cimbra, and the Lagorai mountain range.

Snowshoeing in Alto Adige is equally impressive. The trails start in quaint villages that look like they belong in fairy tale books and wind their way through forests and up mountain slopes. Frozen alpine lakes and jaw-dropping viewpoints are often encountered.

Dolomites snowshoeing: easy hiking and beautiful scenery

The Dolomites are certainly the most popular destination for winter trekking in Trentino. Among the best locations from which to start a snowshoeing trip are Madonna di Campiglio, Andalo, Molveno, and Fai della Paganella. From here you can take the most scenic routes between the Brenta Dolomites and the Adamello Park.

In the Canazei area of Val di Fassa, you can snowshoe in the shadow of the Marmolada and climb up to Sass Pordoi for truly stunning views of the Trentino Dolomites. There are many offers that combine the snowshoe hike with lunches, aperitifs or dinners at the mountain hut. The easier trails are also suitable for children. In fact, the little ones will look forward to wearing these curious “footwear” and sinking into the fresh snow!

Night snowshoeing: a moonlit outing

Among the most atmospheric winter experiences in the mountains is night snowshoeing. These walks are organized starting in the afternoon, so that you can admire the snowy landscape enveloped in the hues of sunset. Usually you stop at a refuge to have dinner all together and then go down to the valley when it is all dark, accompanied by moonlight and a headlamp.

Organized guided snowshoeing: how much do they cost?

Snowshoeing tours with a Mountain Guide vary in price depending on the duration, location and any extras included, such as lunches or dinners. Here are some examples. A 3-hour snowshoe hike in Andalo on Paganella costs €25 per person. In the Fassa Valley, a snowshoe hike with lunch at a mountain lodge costs €50 per person, while an overnight snowshoe hike with dinner costs €65 per person. Snowmobiling or sledding is also included in this case.

26 Jan 2023 | High-altitude snowshoeing on the Paganella in Andalo

An experience to be absolutely repeated. The guide is very knowledgeable and told us many interesting facts about the local fauna and flora. Slightly tiring (if you're not very fit) because the whole first half is uphill, but really doable for everyone (for me, it was the first snowshoe hike ever), and it's really worth it because the view from the Paganella is worth that little extra effort. Apart from that, very reasonable price. Ski lifts excluded (at least from the price I paid). There are malghe (shepherd's huts) in the area where they cook divinely. I'm only sorry to have written the review after almost a year, but I hope you'll forgive me... enjoy!

Recommended experience

Our guide Davide decided at the last minute not to go up the mountain because of the wind and fog that would have prevented us from seeing the wonderful panorama of Andalo. However, he took us on a beautiful route through the woods around the village. Along the way, he gave us interesting explanations on the morphology of the area and how to tackle the trails safely. The only criticism I can make is the failure to provide us with snowshoes, which would have been a nice help during the long walk. And also the closed refuge on Tuesday where we were supposed to have an aperitif, patience. But it was a wonderful experience that I recommend to everyone.

Great experience!

It was our first snowshoe hike and we were really enthusiastic.nWe set off from Andalo and once we got on the cable car, we put on our snowshoes and set off. Honestly, we thought we would have done less climbing, but since we were a group of resins with a 'good pace', the guide suggested we lengthen the tour and we ended up at the La Roda refuge! At the refuge, we rested (excellent crepes) and then descended by chairlift. It was just a shame that we didn't enjoy the view because of the cloudy sky.nOverall a very good experience.nReally good guide!

26 Jan 2023 | Evening snowshoeing with aperitif in Val di Fassa

Beautiful but symbolic aperitif

Extremely impressive views and a very knowledgeable and friendly guide. The snowshoe hike started just before sunset and ended half an hour after nightfall (the part in the dark was illuminated by torchlight). Aperitif ok: choice of a glass of red, white or spritz (I don't think so, but I'm not sure) + a noodle with five/six samples. Tasty but perhaps a little on the small side (for the cost of the experience, not in absolute terms). Overall, the experience was satisfying.

snowshoeing in the snow

My companion and I entrusted Freedome with a snowshoeing trip in Trentino. punctuality OK guide OK knew how to manage the heterogeneous group in terms of age and 'physicality', managing the breaks very well and entertaining the participants with very interesting naturalistic and cultural notions. the snow finally arrived and was our walking companion. i would do it again soon ( if i didn't live far away ) Franco

A good experience

We arrive at the headquarters, they hand us our equipment, we go up in the gondola, they explain to us how to put on the ciapsole and we split into 3 groups to start the route. Everything was fine, we walked and every now and then we stopped and the guide gave us a little description of the area. Unfortunately it was a cloudy day and we didn't get to see the sunset but it was still a good experience.
