Scuba diving with an oxygen tank requires the Open Water Diver certification, which can be obtained by taking specific scuba diving courses. However, almost all diving centers offer introductory experiences for a guided first dive, where you’re followed step by step by the instructor.
Scuba diving takes place at a minimum depth of 5 meters. Equipped with a wetsuit and tank, you leave by boat or dinghy, arrive at the dive site and dive into the water. You gradually reach the desired depth and usually stay underwater for about 45 minutes.
Among the best diving sites there’s the Secca delle Formiche, in the stretch of sea that separates Ischia from Procida. Also known as the Kingdom of Neptune, this dive spot is suitable for beginners as well and is home to a rich biodiversity (sea fans, moray eels, scorpionfish, bream, etc.)
On the southern side of the island, there is another point of great interest for divers: the Punta Sant’Angelo wall. This site is more challenging than the previous one and is more than 100 meters deep. It is home to colorful marine life: yellow sea fans, sea daisies, a precious red coral (Corallium Rubrum) and a “fake” black coral (Gerardia Savaglia) that is actually bright yellow in color.
Last but not least, the Underwater Archaeological Park of Baia in Pozzuoli, is also an honorable mention. Easily accessible from Ischia, this area is a real underwater city, which, due to the volcanic phenomenon of bradyseism, has sunk below the surface of the sea. Here’s possible to admire imperial baths, mosaics, statues and other fascinating ruins from Roman times.
Diving in Ischia costs about €40 for a single dive, to which must be added the cost of equipment rental. An introductory diving experience, on the other hand, costs €85, with full equipment included.
