Everything you need to know about scuba diving

The term diving, or scuba diving, refers to diving with an oxygen tank to a minimum depth of 5 meters to hundreds of meters underwater in the case of experienced divers. Diving requires an Open Water Diver certification, which is obtained by taking specific scuba diving courses. However, diving centers organize introductory diving experiences and offer the opportunity to dive even for novices.

For recreational diving, you don’t need to be an expert swimmer, you just need to feel comfortable underwater. During the dives, instructors are always present, even in the case of experienced divers, because it is necessary to be accompanied by someone who knows the waters and routes perfectly. Before embarking the boat that takes you to the dive site, a safety measures briefing is always held. Although it is practiced more in the summer, diving can be done year-round.

Diving Sardinia: the best diving spots

Sardinia is rich in spots ideal for diving, particularly on the northern coasts. Alghero, Palau, the Maddalena Archipelago, Asinara, Tavolara and Caprera are some of the best known, but this region offers many others sites.

Diving in and around Alghero offers the opportunity to delve into sea caves and caverns and admire the abudantely present red coral. Those who decide to dive in Palau, on the other hand, can explore the waters of La Maddalena, which is considered to be among the absolute best dive sites in Sardinia. Those fascinated by shipwrecks can go diving in Santa Teresa di Gallura and admire a large, sunken Greek ship stranded at a depth of 18 meters.

The island of Tavolara is the must-see destination for those who want to go diving in San Teodoro. Among the most beautiful dives in southern Sardinia, however, one cannot fail to mention Villasimius, Pula and Chia, with dozens and dozens of spots to dive at to admire not only marine flora and fauna but also ancient archaeological finds.

How much does it cost to go diving in Sardinia?

Prices for scuba diving in Sardinia vary by location, difficulty and duration. To get an idea: a double dive in the Maddalena Marine Protected Area costs 120 euros per person, excluding equipment. A beginner’s diving experience on the Emerald Coast costs 130 euros, but in this case the necessary equipment is included in the fee. Diving centers often offer packages of multiple dives, which is certainly a convenient solution for experienced divers.

Gift a scuba diving experience in Sardinia

20 Jul 2026 | Double dive in the Gulf of Orosei

Diving in Orosei

The dive was very good. The team were very kind to help me get kitted out in the water, as I was afraid to do the flip because of my back problems. Although the team were good, I don’t think the dive site they chose was particularly good. The second dive site had literally no marine life at all. The water was extremely cold, even with a 5-mil wetsuit. I’d read so much about diving in Sardinia… but at the end of the day, I’d say it didn’t live up to my expectations. So perhaps you should consider different spots. I collect dive shirts from every place I dive, and I was sold a torn shirt – perhaps it was my fault for not checking it thoroughly, which I don’t usually do, as I’ve never had this experience before.

A top-notch experience

My first time in the sea with my two children. It was just the three of us, and the two brilliant instructors, Gianluca and Alessandro, were entirely at our disposal. A truly top-notch experience – highly recommended. A big thank you to Ale and Gianlu because, as well as being extremely knowledgeable, they’re two lads who have lots of stories to tell about their travels around the world.
