Although it does not require specific prerequisites, those who already participate in board sports such as skateboarding or snowboarding will have an advantage in terms of balance, which is one of the indispensable aspects of surfing.
The first classes are practiced on the floor, precisely to develop balance and learn how to maintain correct posture. In addition to basic techniques, it is also necessary to acquire a good knowledge of winds and sea in order to be able to recognize the appropriate conditions for venturing out at sea. In the beginning, it is not necessary to buy a surfboard, but you use the one provided by the school until you understand which board best suits your needs.
There are multiple surfing spots in Liguria. Recco is one of the most popular and hosts a surf festival every year. It is easily accessible from Genoa and, because of its waves’ characteristics and sandy bottom, it is also suitable for beginners.
Another surfing spot near Genoa is Bogliasco, which has a particularly easy line up (the line up is where surfers position themselves to “catch waves”). Bogliasco also has historical importance because it was here, between the 1970s and 1980s, that the Italian surfing movement began.
Levanto and Lerici are the most suitable locations for surfing on the Levante Riviera, while on the Ponente a major spot can be found in Varazze. Under favorable conditions, waves of up to 2 or 3 meters can be ridden here, and in fact it is mostly frequented by experienced surfers. Other surfing spots in western Liguria can be found in San Remo, Andora, Finale Ligure and Ventimiglia.
Surfing is not strictly a summer activity. It is practiced year-round, and indeed, sometimes the best time is in winter, when swells and winds create the most suitable conditions. It is a good idea, when going surfing in a new place, to ask local surfing schools for information about the waters and conditions, and perhaps arrange to go out with local surfers.
All the surfing spots mentioned have schools or outdoor centers that rent equipment and offer surfing courses or even individual lessons. Prices vary according to location, duration, and private or group type. To get an idea: a private surfing course of 3 lessons of 1.5 hours each costs 185 euros each and is open to students of any level. Surfboard rental is included in the fee.
