On the slopes of Europe's largest active volcano you can enjoy many outdoor activities. In winter, when the lava rocks are covered in snow, a snowshoe hike is undoubtedly a must do experience.

Snowshoeing on Mount Etna provides a picturesque view of the whitewashed landscape. Arriving at about 2,000 meters above sea level, the view becomes breathtaking, opening up to the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas. Snowshoeing on a volcano is a unique experience, and Etna is the place where the four elements meet: air, water, and fire come together to provide endless emotions...even in winter!

Snowshoeing: everything you need to know

Snowshoes are an easy-to-use tool suitable for everyone. Once clipped to the boots, they allow you to walk nimbly on the snow, without sinking but almost “floating” on the snowpack.

With snowshoes, you can go into the woods and be enveloped in silence as you quietly traverse trails with moderate inclines, or hike up climbs that lead to wonderful views. Whichever route you choose, the atmosphere will be magical!

Snowshoeing on Mount Etna: the most scenic routes for a hike

One of the most popular snowshoeing tours on Mount Etna is to Piano Provenzana, from which you can continue to admire whitewashed expanses toward Mount Pizzillo and the Timparossa Hut.

Another truly impressive snowshoe hike takes place along the east flank of the volcano, at an elevation of 2,000 meters, and crosses a lava field with views of Taormina Bay and Etna’s summit area.

Other snowshoeing routes on Mount Etna lead through dense birch forests and to a vantage point with views of the Nebrodi and Peloritani Mountains, all the way to the coastline overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. There are plenty of trails to explore, such as the Schiena dell’Asino (Donkey Back) Trail, the Sartorius Craters Trail or the Serracozzo Trail, each with different characteristics.

Guided snowshoe hikes: how much do they cost?

The best way to fully experience the snow on Mount Etna is to snowshoe in the company of an experienced guide, who accompanies adventurers on the most beautiful trails and provides interesting naturalistic and volcanological explanations.

A snowshoe hike on Mount Etna can vary in cost depending on the route, duration and starting location. For example, a half-day excursion costs €55 per person for adults and €35 per person for children. In this case, pick-up service is also included, as well as snowshoes, sticks and guide accompaniment.

Snowshoe hiking on Mount Etna: an experience to give as a gift

A snowshoe hike on Mount Etna is definitely a one-of-a-kind experience, scenic and exciting at the same time, ideal for nature and landscape lovers. If you want to make a great impression, gift a snowshoe hike with tasting of typical Sicilian products: it will be an original and very welcome gift, want to bet?

Spectacular views

Our guide was excellent and took us to the craters with breathtaking views. The only disappointment was that we booked a snowshoe hike but there was no snow because it melted, surely no fault of our guide Giampiero.
