Snowshoeing on Courmayeur’s trails means being enveloped in silence and admiring breathtaking views at the foot of Mont Blanc. Wearing snowshoes and walking on the soft snow accompanied only by the sound of your own footsteps is an indescribable thrill.
Snowshoes are simple tools suitable for everyone and do not require specific physical abilities per se. If anything, the difficulty may come from the length and elevation difference of the route. Therefore, before setting out on a snow hike in Courmayeur, it is a good idea to search the trail best suitable for your level.
Among the hikes on Mont Blanc in winter that should not be missed is definitely the snowshoe hike that starts from the SkyWay cable car at Punta Helbronner, at 3,466 m (10,000 ft) elevation. This is a loop trail, not too challenging, through the slopes of Col du Toula and Col de Rochefort.
Snowshoeing routes in Courmayeur are plentiful. Before setting off, however, you need to assess the weather conditions well so as not to incur avalanche risk. It is best to be accompanied by a mountain guide who is fully familiar with the terrain and snow conditions.

One of the most popular routes for snowshoeing in Courmayeur is to the Bonetti Hut (2,025 m) in Val Ferret. Starting from the village of Planpincieux, you climb to the hut accompanied by views of the highest mountains in the Mont Blanc massif.

Actually, on the guide's advice, we opted for a more scenic walk than the Val Ferret tour and started from Monte San Carlo to the frozen lake of Arpy. The first part took place in the woods and our super-guide Pierpaolo told us many anecdotes and curiosities about nature and the woods that greatly enriched a simple walk in the snow. The second part took place on the cross-country with a breathtaking view of Mont Blanc. The day was beautiful and despite the scarce snowfall this year, the landscape was really beautiful! We were a large group and not all sporty, so we were a bit apprehensive about the level of the hike, which actually turned out to be easy and not too challenging, as much as the guide had told us. It gave us the chance to enjoy the mountains outdoors for a while and still have the energy to enjoy the afternoon and soiree in Courmayeur. At the end of the route, at the La Genzianella hotel, we had delicious typical polenta in all sauces and mouth-watering home-made desserts. Modest cost. Special thanks to our guide Pierpaolo for making this excursion so interesting and enjoyable at the same time!

We went snowshoeing. Pierpaolo made sure to contact us the day before to remind us of the time and the meeting point. We called him because we were having trouble finding a taxi to get to the point and he was really incredible: he was passing by our hotel and he picked us up. Snowshoeing is something unique, indescribable. It makes you become one with nature, the birds and the sky. During the stops along the way, Pierpaolo indulged in short, pleasant reflections on nature and anthropology, and also on fondue production 😋 Once up there...well, the view leaves you speechless. Pierpaolo is excellence and the place... you have to visit it!

A wonderful snowshoe hike. We were very lucky with the weather, lots of snow and wonderful sunshine to warm us up during our stops. It was really nice to be able to learn more about the Val Ferret area and the ever-present Mont Blanc. Highly recommended if you can't ski :), snowshoeing is always a nice alternative.
