Canyoning: what it is and how to practice it

Canyoning, also called canyoneering, is an exploratory practice of river environments. It consists of walking the course of a stream through rocky gorges, cliffs and rough sections. It involves swimming past natural corridors and pools, rope rappels, diving from slides and rocky spurs, and more.

Canyoning is an activity for everyone. All it takes is good aquatics and some courage to dive in, although obstacles can often be circumvented. There are trails for all levels and, in any case, the activity is always preceded by a briefing on progression techniques and safety rules.

To do canyoning you must wear a swimsuit, thermal shirt and sneakers. The outdoor center provides the neoprene wetsuit, helmet and technical equipment.

Canyoning in Piedmont: the best trails

The best canyoning trails in Piedmont are found in Valsesia, Val d’Ossola and Val Chisone. Generally, streams are divided into sections of different difficulty so that all types of participants can find the most suitable solution.

Canyoning on the Sorba River in Valsesia is known for its strong acrobatic and adrenaline component. Also in the area, you can travel the Sesia Gorge in a less reckless but equally fascinating trail.

In the Ossola Valley in the Verbano region, canyoning can be done on the Rio Lasino, while those who want to go canyoning near Turin can opt for the Rio Claro in the Chisone Valley, an hour drive from the capital.

How much does it cost to go canyoning in Piedmont?

Canyoning in Piedmont costs 50 to 75 euros per person depending on the location and the difficulty of the course. Some centers also organize multiple experiences, where other activities such as adventure trails, mountain-bike tours or barbecues are added to the canyoning course. In this case you spend 90 to 100 euros per person.

Great experience, adrenaline-pumping and makes you face your fears. It's great fun, you're in the middle of nature and you face a series of obstacles, all safely and you don't need to have experience. Giorgio is very good and explains well how you have to do it, you just have to execute and let yourself go, the rest will be taken care of by the natural slides of the Canyon. Highly recommended and worth doing again.

A real adventure

This was our very first canyoing experience and thanks to our Guide Giorgio it has been an unforgettable adventure. He took his time to explain the equipment to us and gave all the necessary support and guidance. All the time, we felt safe. We can highly recommend this activity to everyone who wants an exciting experience submerged in nature.

Pure adrenalin

First ever canyoning experience for my wife and I, we had a great time. Friendly and patient guides led us along a varied route, including climbing descents with harnesses, jumps into pools of crystal-clear water and natural slides. The most memorable spot: twelve metres of taboga under the waterfall. Highly recommended!

compelling!

Milto bello! Long and not monotonous route, with various difficulties, from rope descents to toboggans to dives! Very good guide and attentive to everyone's needs. Great day to spend with friends, the equipment provided is excellent, I would recommend the neoprene gloves like tribord in addition.

Canyoning

I was expecting a group activity, but instead there were two of us plus our guide. Adrenalin was at its highest, with jumps of up to 8 metres into pools of crystal-clear water and almost vertical slides! Fantastic experience! The only flaw: the snack 😞 We expected more than just hot tea...

Tolle Erfahrung
