Canyoning, or canyoneering, is an outdoor discipline that involves following the path traced by streams, venturing through gorges, caves, rock walls and ravines (gorges) carved by water erosion. This activity combines mountaineering techniques with aquatic disciplines. In fact, you might have to rappel or climb up a wall, only to later have to dive or slide down toboggans, natural adrenaline-filled and fun slides.
To go canyoning, it is necessary to wear a neoprene wetsuit and, under it, a swimsuit. Regarding the footwear, you should bring shoes suitable for walking on the river bottom or rock, such as hiking boots. Helmets are also mandatory. All technical equipment is provided by the certified guide who accompanies the participants during the activity.
One of the most popular destinations for canyoning enthusiasts in Umbria is undoubtedly the Forra del Casco, in the Valnerina, near Spoleto. The canyon, which is very impressive and only a meter wide at its narrowest point, presents slides, crystal-clear pools of water and a breathtaking 30-meter-high waterfall.
Closer to Orvieto and Todi, there’s also another location, famous for its castle and narrow rocky gorges, perfect for canyoning; that is, the village of Prodo. The Prodo Gorge, in fact, offers some of the most fun canyoning routes in all of central Italy thanks to the variety of obstacles it offers.
Speaking of Umbria, it is impossible not to mention the Marmore Falls. It’s one of the highest waterfalls in Europe and hosts numerous centers for river sports, from canyoning to rafting and hydrospeed.
Other gorges ideal for canyoning in Umbria are Rocca Gelli, which is easy and suitable even for beginners (with a thrilling 16-meter rope rappel), Pago le Fosse, Fosso dell’Etrica and Fosso del Bagno.
Canyoning in Umbria has prices that hover around 60 euros per person for excursions lasting four or five hours. For shorter routes of 2 to 3 hours, rates drop to about 45 euros per person. The fee always includes an experienced guide and full equipment.
Gifting a voucher for a canyoning course means having friends or family discover an adrenaline-pumping and fun activity. It will immerse them in nature (in every sense of the word) by making them rediscover the pleasure of adventure and dragging them inside a picturesque landscape. Canyoning makes it possible to discover places otherwise inaccessible, real natural treasures that have remained untouched by time. It will be an unforgettable experience for all ages!

A beautiful route, a nature that you will never see except like this, the guide is a special person but before that he is a great professional who makes you feel that you can trust him blindly. This is a very important factor because, in our (my partner's and my) opinion, it is NOT a route for beginners - on the website it is described as "easy", we disagree and recommend that it be modified - as it requires basic rope descent experience in order to be tackled safely and with serenity. The guide is attentive and present but certain movements you just have to do and there are many risks along the way. For example, for me, who am neither strong nor very well trained, if I don't work out twice a week, it was very difficult and I gave some pretty hard knocks. Having said that, we found the most appropriate person to take us along the route and it was definitely a unique experience that I would recommend to those who start from an adequate technical base and, of course, those who are not even vaguely afraid of heights.

We did the descent of the Helmet Gorge. Very very enjoyable and well organised. We got on well with the staff who accompanied and instructed us. It was an intense day. Of course, at the end of the descent we were exhausted both physically and mentally and it takes a fair amount of physical preparation to do everything. But it is very adrenalin-pumping to go down a torrent like that.

A perfect day, a great experience, pure adrenaline, perfect guides... what more can I say. Despite the fact that it's not the easiest 'route', the guides make you feel at ease and completely safe. For those who suffer from vertigo... not to be missed.
