Snorkeling: what it is and how to practice it

Snorkeling is one of the many water sports that can be enjoyed at sea. It consists in exploring seabeds and reefs by swimming at the surface or diving to a shallow depth. Snorkeling involves wearing fins, mask and snorkel to swim more easily, look underwater and breathe while swimming.

Snorkeling is not a particularly physically demanding activity, nor is it necessary to be an accomplished swimmer. Just know how to stay afloat and move confidently through the water. In addition, on guided excursions you are always accompanied by an experienced instructor who can offer everyone the necessary support or the use of a float. Snorkeling can be done year-round, with the addition of a neoprene wetsuit during colder periods.

Where to go snorkeling in Sicily

Among the most popular locations for snorkeling in Sicily there is the coastal stretch between Taormina and Giardini Naxos. Observing the shallow waters of Isola Bella or swimming in the various adjacent bays, you can spot many small fish moving among the rocky crevices. Also on the east coast of Sicily, there are several dive spots for snorkeling in Catania and Acireale or further south between Syracuse and Marzamemi. Here, the Plemmirio Marine Protected Area is definitely worth seeing.

In western Sicily, one of the most popular snorkeling destinations is the Zingaro Nature Reserve, between San Vito Lo Capo and Castellammare del Golfo. This area is known for its crystal clear waters and numerous pristine caves and bays teeming with fish. Another must-see location for snorkelers is the island of Favignana, with its clear seabed and transparent waters. Cala Rossa, Cala Azzurra and Bue Marino are places definitely worth a visit.

Other famous snorkeling locations in Sicily are the Aeolian Islands, the Ustica nature reserve and the Vendicari wildlife oasis. Lampedusa‘s clear waters allow visibility down to 50 meters and are perfect for viewing some of the richest biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea.

How much does it cost to snorkel in Sicily?

Prices for snorkeling tours in Sicily vary according to starting location, itinerary, and duration. For example, a snorkeling tour in Taormina and Isola Bella costs 35 euros per person and lasts 3 hours. To dive along Catania‘s coastline, you spend between 20 and 30 euros per person. Instead, for a snorkeling tour to Favignana and Levanzo you spend about 80 euros per person and stay out the whole day.

Snorkeling in Sicily: the perfect gift for sea lovers

If some of your friends or family members are sea lovers, a snorkeling tour can be a perfect gift for them. So, for upcoming birthdays or various anniversaries, don’t think about buying an item. Instead, gift them an activity in nature to experience unforgettable emotions!

Snorkeling will really appeal to everyone because it is relaxing, allows you to discover enchanting places and beautiful seas full of splendid fish. 05 Aug 2026 | Plemmirio Nature Reserve boat tour with snorkelling

A really good time

A lovely boat trip with two stops for a swim. During the first one, with our snorkelling masks on, we saw lots of fish. The boat has glass-bottomed panels, which allowed us to enjoy the seabed throughout the trip. We don’t speak Italian and only a little English. Vittorio adapted his explanations to French for the main descriptions and used his phone to provide the historical details. It was brilliant – thanks again!

The best place for snorkelling in Catania!

It was brilliant! We saw loads of marine life whilst snorkelling, and Agnese was the best instructor ever! She was really friendly and knew her stuff. There was also time to relax afterwards. There are showers with hairdryers too. Don’t take the bus – take an Uber to get there; we did, and it was really convenient.

A half-day well spent

A brilliant way to see all the coves in the nature reserve and have a swim in some of them. I’d recommend it.

Fairy tale

Charming and quaint. The only downside was that two girls on the tour with us had their music turned up really loud, but that’s nobody’s fault ✨ I’d recommend it

Top

We went on the boat tour today. As well as the wonderful caves we visited and the crystal-clear sea we swam in, we were really impressed by the service and friendliness of the crew. Excellent value for money – I’d do it another 100 times.
