Terminillo snowshoeing: the pleasure of walking on fresh snow
Snowshoes are tools that you attach to the base of your boots to allow you to walk nimbly on fresh snow, giving you the sensation of “floating” on the white mantle. The activity itself requires no special physical ability and is also suitable for children. If anything, the difficulty may come from the length and elevation difference of the route.
The best snowshoeing on Terminillo involves 250 to 450 meters of elevation gain, so all you need is to be reasonably used to walking on the mountains and you can set off with no worries! To stay completely safe, the advice is always to be accompanied by a licensed guide who is fully familiar with the trails and snow conditions.
Snowshoeing in Terminillo: trails and paths for a winter hike
Many of the hikes on Terminillo start at Pian de’ Valli in the province of Rieti. From here you can reach the Sebastiano Lodge or the La Fossa Lodge and, for the more trained, continue to climb in altitude to reach the Sorgente dell’Acqua Santa, the Sella della Val Organo or other vantage points from which to admire magnificent views of the Gran Sasso and the Laga Mountains.
From Pian de’ Valli you can also take the Terminillo Planetary Trail, a loop trail of nearly 8 km. Trekking through it on snowshoes during a night snowshoe hike, you can observe stars and constellations in a fairy-tale setting. But even for those who decide to walk it in broad daylight, excitement is guaranteed as you cross one of the most beautiful forests in the Apennines.
Because of its location and distance, Terminillo is an ideal destination for those who want to snowshoe near Rome without going outside the region. From the capital it takes just over 1 1/2 hours to reach Pian de’ Valli or Rialto, the two main landmarks for spending a day on Terminillo.
How much does an organized snowshoe hike on Terminillo cost?
Prices for a guided snowshoe hike in Terminillo may vary depending on the route, duration and any extra services included in the experience. It starts at 25€ per person for a 4-hour hike, including snowshoe and stick rental.

all OK
All OK. For me, the route was of medium difficulty, but that is totally subjective (my friends said 'easy'). Unfortunately the weather was bad and the effort was not rewarded by the views. The stage was short because there was a small blizzard. The guides were very helpful, they waited for us at the start, guided us and helped us along the route, with some explanations when there was visibility. The dinner at the restaurant was super good, that definitely made up for the activity. I would do it again!

Terminillo snowshoeing
We took part for the first time in the snowshoe hike on Sunday 25 January - very tiring for me, but really exciting and beautiful! The guides were nice and super professional!! Sore note, unfortunately we had to wait an hour for people to arrive late, but the guides were patient and gave us important information in the meantime! Thank you and see you next time!
