Sardinia is not only synonymous with sun, sea and boat tours, but it's also a popular destination for fans of horseback riding. On the island, in fact, horses were used as a means of transportation and work from the earliest times. This tradition has remained intact over time and can be seen today in the many riding stables, farms with horses and equestrian clubs that offer tourists and residents horseback riding tours and other equestrian activities.
Those who want to engage in horseback riding in Sardinia can choose the sea or the hinterland. In both cases, you will find yourself immersed in the Mediterranean wilderness and have a unique experience together with a really special 4-legged friend.

The first thing to know is that anyone can ride a horse. There are no minimum requirements, other than being in good health and being at least 14 years old. Before setting off on the ride, the equestrian guides give an introductory lesson on basic riding techniques and the main commands to be given to the horses. Novices and beginners are assigned the most docile specimens to ensure a pleasant and safe experience.
Horseback riding can be done on easy, mostly flat trails or on more technical routes that require mastery in all gaits (stride, trot and gallop). Comfortable clothing and durable long pants should be worn. This type of activity has no seasonality: if the weather is good, you can ride all year round.
One of the most popular areas for going horseback riding in Sardinia is the Costa Verde on the western side. Characterized by wide spaces, sand dunes and unspoiled nature, here you can take rides along the seashore or on the hillside, with panoramic views of the coast. The Oristano area also boasts a great equestrian tradition and one of the most important equestrian centers on the island, in the municipality of Arborea.
Those who love horses and want to admire them in the wild can visit the Giara di Gesturi, a plateau in the Sardinian hinterland that is home to a native species: the Giara horses. In southern Sardinia, excursions can be made to the Sulcis area or to Costa Rei, not far from Villasimius. Those who want to go horseback riding in Cagliari can rely on the various equestrian clubs in the city or move to Pula, Capoterra or Quartu Sant’Elena.
Other possibilities for those on vacation in Sardinia who want to enjoy a horseback ride on the beach are the agritourisms with stables in the Olbia, San Teodoro, and Golfo di Orosei areas.
A 1-hour horseback ride costs 25 to 40 euros per person, depending on the location. Prices increase for longer excursions. For example, half-day horseback riding tours range from 85 to 100 euros per person. In addition, it is also possible to take 3- or 4-day-long excursions, which cost at least 400 euros.
More and more people are choosing to gift an outdoor experience instead of a material object to be kept locked in a drawer. If you are also thinking of giving a gift that is different from the usual, you can find lots of exciting and fun outdoor activities here.
Horseback riding can be a special gift for animal and nature lovers. You don’t need to be an experienced horseman: the rides are suitable for novices as well, and with the help of equestrian guides, everyone can enjoy an unforgettable and relaxing experience!

My mum and I treated ourselves to this spectacular experience. Neither of us had ever ridden a horse before this experience. The staff gave us all the necessary instructions before we left and we immediately felt at ease. Matteo acted as our guide for the whole 2 hours, where we walked along the Poetto seafront. I would do it again a thousand times! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity.

I had a wonderful experience riding along the park and the Poetto Beach. The views were stunning, and riding through the ocean was truly special! Horses are seasoned, no fuss with traffic or cold water. My guide, Mattey, didn’t speak much English but was very attentive and made sure I was comfortable and safe the whole time. I had some experience and was able to complete the tour at my own pace, walking, trotting and even a bit of cantering, which made the ride even more exciting. The animals at the farm are all very friendly. A great way to enjoy Cagliari’s coastline!nnP.s. Stellina, my horse, only understands Italian, I realised that halfway 🤣

Very nice experience that I had with my boyfriend who came to visit me. We were looked after well and it allowed me to get reacquainted with horses after an accident several years ago. We will definitely come back for more experiences!
