Sardinia is not only synonymous with sun, sea and boat tours, but it's also a popular destination for fans of horseback riding. On the island, in fact, horses were used as a means of transportation and work from the earliest times. This tradition has remained intact over time and can be seen today in the many riding stables, farms with horses and equestrian clubs that offer tourists and residents horseback riding tours and other equestrian activities.

Those who want to engage in horseback riding in Sardinia can choose the sea or the hinterland. In both cases, you will find yourself immersed in the Mediterranean wilderness and have a unique experience together with a really special 4-legged friend.

Horseback riding: what you need to know before mounting

The first thing to know is that anyone can ride a horse. There are no minimum requirements, other than being in good health and being at least 14 years old. Before setting off on the ride, the equestrian guides give an introductory lesson on basic riding techniques and the main commands to be given to the horses. Novices and beginners are assigned the most docile specimens to ensure a pleasant and safe experience.

Horseback riding can be done on easy, mostly flat trails or on more technical routes that require mastery in all gaits (stride, trot and gallop). Comfortable clothing and durable long pants should be worn. This type of activity has no seasonality: if the weather is good, you can ride all year round.

Sardinia horseback riding tours: the best itineraries

One of the most popular areas for going horseback riding in Sardinia is the Costa Verde on the western side. Characterized by wide spaces, sand dunes and unspoiled nature, here you can take rides along the seashore or on the hillside, with panoramic views of the coast. The Oristano area also boasts a great equestrian tradition and one of the most important equestrian centers on the island, in the municipality of Arborea.

Those who love horses and want to admire them in the wild can visit the Giara di Gesturi, a plateau in the Sardinian hinterland that is home to a native species: the Giara horses. In southern Sardinia, excursions can be made to the Sulcis area or to Costa Rei, not far from Villasimius. Those who want to go horseback riding in Cagliari can rely on the various equestrian clubs in the city or move to Pula, Capoterra or Quartu Sant’Elena.

Other possibilities for those on vacation in Sardinia who want to enjoy a horseback ride on the beach are the agritourisms with stables in the Olbia, San Teodoro, and Golfo di Orosei areas.

Sardinia horseback riding tours: price information

A 1-hour horseback ride costs 25 to 40 euros per person, depending on the location. Prices increase for longer excursions. For example, half-day horseback riding tours range from 85 to 100 euros per person. In addition, it is also possible to take 3- or 4-day-long excursions, which cost at least 400 euros.

Gift a horseback riding tour: an adventure in contact with nature

More and more people are choosing to gift an outdoor experience instead of a material object to be kept locked in a drawer. If you are also thinking of giving a gift that is different from the usual, you can find lots of exciting and fun outdoor activities here.

Horseback riding can be a special gift for animal and nature lovers. You don’t need to be an experienced horseman: the rides are suitable for novices as well, and with the help of equestrian guides, everyone can enjoy an unforgettable and relaxing experience!

Great views

This was an incredible experience- for a beginner, not really familiar with horse riding. The area itself and horses were great, however we didn't like the fact that it wasn't clearly stated where the meeting point is. In the confirmation email from them there's an address which is just the town name where they're based but no number, coordinates, nothing. We arrived on time, but we had to call the "contact person" because we had no idea where to go. Even though in the booking we stated we only speak english, when I called that number a woman answered in Italian and when I spoke english back, she hung up. That happened three times, after that we gave up and decided to drive around to see if we can find it. In about 15mins we received a message that she was going to get the instructor to call us, who then helped us find it. Luckily, we did, but because we were a bit late the instructor rushed over the explanaition on what to do with horses, especially didn't mention much about how to calm them down in case they start running or if something scares them. Which is exactly what happened, so that wasn't pleasant and neither was the instructor. Some of his comments/reactions weren't appropriate.

Fantastic experience

We booked the 1h horse ride as a family with 2 children (9 and 5 years old).nStefania and Giuseppe welcomed us warmly on their ranch. They carefully picked the horses for each one of us. And while having doubts before the arrival if our 5 yr old would even want to get on the horse all anxiety was gone the moment he met Alaska!nThe horses are very well trained and quiet. nThen Stefania and Giuseppe took us on a ride through the wonderful landscape and to the river. Water was so low, that we did not wet our shoes, but despite that we had a great time.nAfter the horse ride we could help to take saddle and bridles off and bring the horses back to their field. Since it was lunch time and our children were hungry we sat down at the terrace and gave them the pinick we had brought along and stayed for quite a while talking with the Stefania and Giuseppe.nWe had a fantastic time and can only recommend this place, also and especially for families with children.nThanks Stefania and Giuseppe for making our day so wonderful!

Horseback riding

For the first time in a long time, we were able to organise a horseback ride. As a first, we chose Sa Prugnola Ranch, a magnificent piece of unspoilt land where you can breathe in a real farm air. We were welcomed by Giuseppe and Stefania, very kind people who carefully introduced us to their horses and carefully explained the precautions to take with these wonderful animals. The ride in the saddle was not only relaxing, but also a true immersion in nature, in which you also have the opportunity to cross a water course. During the walk, you come into close contact with the horses, creating a true symbiosis, so much so that you immediately become attached. At the end of the experience, we were able to use the water and have a pleasant chat with Giuseppe and Stefania. Needless to say, it was fantastic and we will repeat the experience.

Wonderful ride and one to do again. The place is beautiful and the horses are lovely. It was the first experience on horseback and despite the fear we were put at ease. The owner Giuseppe, a very attentive and scrupulous person will teach you the little notions necessary and will accompany you throughout the ride making sure of everything. You will be welcomed into a ranch that is well cared for in every detail and you will have the chance to see the horses that are free in their proper space. The river crossing was enchanting and I would never have expected such a beautiful experience. Special credit also goes to little Ginevra who, following in her father's footsteps at only 6 years old, already knows how to win over her visitors. Good luck to the sloe for the coming seasons because she thoroughly deserves it.

Very friendly atmosphere, excellent staff, who immediately put you at ease. for those who don't have a lot on their mind but just want to switch off and immerse themselves for a few hours in the nature of the Sardinian hinterland. I recommend the two-hour walk. Suitable for children (not too young, 6 years and up would be best) and families.

UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

Perhaps the best experience I've had, when we arrived at the stables we were warmly welcomed and offered a drink, after which we were given a helmet and assigned a horse, wonderful, well-behaved horses, but what is most striking is the surrounding landscape, boundless, spectacular, a unique experience, highly recommended!
