Rafting in Umbria: everything you need to know

Rafting is a sporting discipline that involves descending a stream in a raft. Each raft can accommodate a maximum of 8 people.
Before setting off, a short basic lesson is held to learn how to properly use the paddles and the rest of the equipment. In addition to a swimsuit, participants wear a neoprene wetsuit, a life jacket and a protective helmet to travel safely.
Once on board, the rafting guide gives commands to the crew to move through the natural obstacles along the river.

The best rafting trips in Umbria

Rafting centers in Umbria organize activities suitable for everyone, beginners and experts.
Those who wish to go rafting in the Valnerina can choose to navigate the Nera River. Beginners and families prefer to go through the less challenging section, while thrill-seekers have a go at a harder route under the Marmore Falls.
Another possible location is the Corno River, a tributary of the Nera River, known for the quality of its water.

Rafting at Marmore Falls

Those who want to take more extreme routes choose to go rafting under the Marmore Falls. Here the Nera River flows faster, creating 4th grade rapids through the rich vegetation of the Nera River Park.

Rafting in Norcia: the best trips on the Corno River

The best rafting trip in Norcia is on the Corno River. Along the river you pass through stretches where the water flows rapidly and stretches where you can contemplate the view in peace. Starting from Serravalle di Norcia, you reach the Biselli gorges, a striking spot characterized by high vertical walls overhanging the river.
Also, on the way, you can stop at a small beach to drink and refresh yourself with the pure water from a natural spring.

Rafting on the Nera River: the best trips

From Scheggino you can go rafting on the Nera River, on its 5-km stretch with no technical difficulties. This route is perfect for families with children and for those who want to appreciate the beauty of the Valnerina landscape.

Soft Rafting in Valnerina, family-friendly trips

In stretches where the Nera River is particularly calm, it is also possible to go rafting with younger children or friends who cannot swim.
The trip, in this case, is a leisurely and scenic ride down the river aboard the raft. You get to have fun in the splashing water while admiring the kingfishers perched on branches and logs, ready to swoop down into the water.

A day out with the children on the River Corno

A few years later, I tried rafting on the River Corno again with my children. The guides were well-trained, experienced, friendly and courteous; I spent a lovely day in the company of other adventurers. Fortunately, due to some changes in the weather over the years, the route was more picturesque and exciting this time round. It was a shame about the usual problem of low water levels near the trout farm, which forces people to get out of the raft and continue a short section of the route on foot. The guide did a brilliant job; during the walk along the old electric railway line, she made the most of the natural beauty and managed to entertain the guests with historical anecdotes about the river and the railway.

A refreshing and fun experience

I treated myself to this adventure with my children. It was great fun. Our guide, Azul, from Argentina, was absolutely lovely. The route is scenic in the first section and more action-packed in the second. The perfect organisation meant we could relax and enjoy a morning of sport in the cool river air. Highly recommended to everyone.

Family rafting

It was a lovely day: the lads welcomed us with smiles and warmth. They were helpful and friendly. The river trip was very enjoyable, with fun breaks, dives and splashes of ice-cold, refreshing water. It was a wonderful experience to share with friends and family. I’d give it top marks!
